So you’ve finally decided to learn the guitar and you don’t really know where to start. Should you buy an electric? How about an acoustic? Where should you buy your guitar from? These are some of the questions you may be asking yourself. Let’s take them one at a time.
Should I Buy An Electric or An Acoustic Guitar?
This is something that almost everybody thinks about at one time. I think that the answer lies in what kind of music you want to play, your budget for your first guitar, and what’s available to you. If you want to play so you can shred like Eddie Van Halen or Dragon Force, you should definitely get an electric guitar if you can afford one. remember, you need to buy an amplifier and a cord also. It’s usually slightly more expensive than an acoustic. You can probably pick up a package for $199 or less.
If you just want to be able to strum some chords for the fun of it and maybe sing a song or two around the campfire, and acoustic would be your best choice. The music store I work in has some pretty nice acoustic guitars for $89.00 and sometimes some pretty good used acoustics come in that go for even less.
Warning About Cheap Guitars Online
Be careful if your buying your first guitar online, there’s a whole lot of bad guitars going for very cheap, and I mean BAD! I’ve seen them for as low as $10 on eBay. DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE GUITARS! I recommend going to your local music store and getting help from one of the salesmen. At every store I’ve taught at, the salesmen were very knowledgeable and took care of their customers.
Whether you should buy an electric guitar or an acoustic guitar is really a personal choice. After teaching a few hundred different people I’ve come to realize that one choice is not the best for everyone. Do what feels right to you.
